Don’t be tossed to and fro

Don’t be tossed to and fro

I saw a white silk scarf uncurl, it floated in the air for a moment and then encircled me. One fast twirl and I was encased in this scarf. It turned my body toward a specific location. I had a deep understanding I was being moved and gently held to ensure I kept my vision where it needed to be.

“You cannot agree to do something without first looking toward it and surrendering to what My plan is for you in the situation. Consider that without my input your decision-making falls short.”

That seemed to be the understatement of the year. Yet I knew that there were times in my life more than I want to admit, where I went with my own plan instead of God’s.

“I desire for you unity, first within yourself. Then within your marriage. Then within the local church. Finally, with the Body of Christ.”

The silk scarf wrapped tight around me felt like what I imagined a swaddled baby felt like. Secure. Peaceful.

“What you look upon or turn your face to and agree with is infinitely important. You want nothing within you to disagree. All things need to be lined up to the Word and will of God.”

Unity

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1: 5-8, ESV)

Don’t be tossed to and fro

One of the worst feelings you can have is being tortured by indecision. Especially when the choices impact our loved ones. It feels like the decision is a matter of life and death, and sometimes it is.

To have doubt during these times is torturous. To have an answer from the Lord with His blessed assurance is bliss, surrounded in peace.

You then can put all your effort in one direction. No precious energy is stolen by our heads being whipped back and forth searching for a solution. In that place, your mind is tossed to and fro with imagined scenarios of both good and bad outcomes. The truth is, none of us are omniscient. But God is. He holds our situations and our loved ones’ lives simultaneously. We can trust His direction and insight.

I don’t know about you, but I can testify to, too many desperate moments when my head was on a swivel. I could not lay down my mind on the altar. I kept trying to control the situation instead of waiting on the Lord and receiving his direction.

I never want to do that again. It is horrific, emotionally, physically, and spiritually draining. We serve a good God who doesn’t want us to live that way. He desires unity for every one of His children so that we might be at peace. He doesn’t desire us to be tossed to and fro.

Prayer for you and me:

Lord Jesus protect us from ourselves. Swaddle us in Your peace and keep our hearts trained on Your wisdom. Let us not become double-minded in any way concerning Your ways. We choose you as our strong anchor so as not to be thrown back and forth on the sea of life. Your way is the best way and we surrender to it now. In Jesus’ name.
