Go Deeper

Go Deeper with God

I heard. “You need to go deeper with Me.”

Then, I saw a handheld metal drilling tool. The kind that is shaped like a T and takes two hands and your whole-body strength to turn it. Someone had positioned the drill pointed downward on a dock by the water. Attached to the drill was a large boulder. With great effort, I turned the drill. The work was horrible as the wood splintered, then gave way to empty space. I couldn’t help but think, what am I doing? As I twisted it, the boulder came closer and closer and began crushing me and the drill. It made sense to me that when God said to go deeper with Him; I was supposed to use the drill to go deeper. So why this futile task of drilling to hit empty air? What was this crushing boulder about? I clearly heard from Him to drill down deeper with Him. So why would I have to struggle?

God responded, “You are attaching false expectations. When you do what I’ve asked you to do with wrong/ vain thinking, it creates hindrances.”

I sat for a moment, not getting it. “Where have I been vain?”

“When you believe that, you can orchestrate the timing, location, people and provision for the job I give you. When getting the task done (for me its writing) is more important than developing depth with Me.”

Yuck, that struck home. In my desire to do it how it made sense to me, and trying to make it look the way I thought it should, I had created my own hindrances that were never meant to be there. But waiting and relying on the next word and move from God is really hard. It sounds good in the biblical accounts of people doing it and it makes sense, but carrying out this obedience is contrary to our normal way of living.

“Let me show you why you must go deeper. You must wait and listen to Me. It’s for your own good.”

Then, I saw the same set-up with the old-fashioned drill and the chain with the boulder attached, sink deep into the ocean and stick into the seafloor. This time, as I turned the top bar, the drill went down deeper and deeper with each rotation. And the turning was so much easier and fruitful without the hard deck boards and empty space beneath the dock. As it went deeper, the boulder came closer and kept it anchored.

“On the dock, the boulder is a hindrance, in the deep ocean, it’s an asset. I need you to see that with My direction and provision of things that don’t make sense or even seem like a problem will ultimately be necessary to help you.”

  • The tools He gives you may not make sense for where you currently are.

  • The plans He gives you may not make sense or be possible with the location, people or mind-set that you currently have.

But when you wait for His perfect timing, and the provision of people, money and tools for the job, then it becomes possible and maybe even probable.

“Through Him we also have access by faith into this [remarkable state of] grace in which we [firmly and safely and securely] stand. Let us rejoice in our [a]hope and the confident assurance of [experiencing and enjoying] the glory of [our great] God [the manifestation of His excellence and power]. And not only this, but [with joy] let us exult in our sufferings and rejoice in our hardships, knowing that hardship (distress, pressure, trouble) produces patient endurance; and endurance, proven character (spiritual maturity); and proven character, hope and confident assurance [of eternal salvation]. Such hope [in God’s promises] never disappoints us, because God’s love has been abundantly poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” (Romans 5:2-5, AMP)

Don’t be afraid to grab a hold of the promises He has given in his Logos (written word of God) and in the Rhema (personal words He’s given you). If He has spoken it. It will come to pass. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be hard work. That doesn’t mean that you won’t have to overcome doubt or what seems like impossible circumstances.

Don’t believe that because it looks impossible that it is.

Stand firm in the words He’s spoken over you. Stand firm in His promises in the Bible. Grab a hold of other Christians on this exciting, rewarding and sometimes painful journey toward God’s heart.

  • Drill down deep to connect with God’s heart.

  • This is where you will find the solutions.

Prayers for you and me: Lord, I’m listening, but it seems I’m getting crushed. Did I hear You wrong? I believe You. Help my unbelief. Pull me closer as I drill down deeper into You. I’m desperate for Your presence and Your wisdom. Help me listen. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

As I am reading, I am getting the word/phrase "breaker bar". He is your breaker bar, in his word.
